Mantua Gardens, located in northeastern Ohio, has been in business since 1995, and has provided the community with high-quality annuals, perennials, garden supplies and more. In 2012, owner Darin Kelley was approached with the idea to start growing hydroponic lettuce and other fresh greens year round, in addition to continuing with the established garden and greenhouse center. With the demand for locally grown produce, Darin decided to branch out into the realm of hydroponic growing and looked to Growers Supply to help him get started.

Is that a speck of dust? A sliver? No silly, it’s Lucy. It seems like just yesterday that Lucy Simpson Elite was born. She was very tiny but we already had big plans for her and all of her sisters and brothers who shared her birth (I mean plant) date.
Growing is not as easy as mixing seeds with a little dirt, water and sunlight as some might think. Different plants thrive in different environments, so when you choose a seed or start, make sure you look into everything it needs to grow into a strong, healthy plant. Providing the perfect growing environment for your plants may cause you to spend a little more time planning now, but you will be so surprised by the results down the road that it will be worth it. For example, Ron Harrison, of Mid Atlantic Growers, discovered that the ideal growing environment made all the difference at his wholesale growing business in New Jersey. Read more
Sam isn’t the only one who gets to have all the growing fun! At our Connecticut location, we are incorporating product training into a hands-on growing experience. Last year, we grew tomatoes in raised beds and dutch buckets, and the success we had gave us the confidence to expand our crop this year. We are growing flowers, including petunias and sunflowers, and veggies of course, including everything from jalapenos to potatoes to tomatoes this year. We are also experimenting with different types of growing. We will be growing hydroponically in NFT channels, in raised beds outside again, and inside the greenhouse.
The first seeds to get started were the petunias and jalapeno peppers. Let’s take a look at how we got started:
